You know a restaurant is good when 80% of its diners are not its intended market / audience. That is exactly what the people at The Hungry Tapir have manage to accomplish. They have made their vegan and vegetarian food so good that even the carnivores love it!
The Hungry Tapir is located in the heart of china town, KL. What was once a place of sin and sex has now become a gentrified location that pulls in the café hoppers and youngsters. Founded by Eurasian mother-daughter duo Cynthia Rodrigo and Makissa Smeeton. The fun is just beginning, they also have a full service bar! If you have any dietary restrictions, fret not. The Hungry Tapir has got you covered with gluten-free, keto-friendly as well as onion and garlic free dishes here.
The first thing one will notice when entering is the amount of natural light, this is thanks to the skylight on the first floor. The interior is urban-chic, with an assorted range and collection of vintage furniture in various shapes and sizes as well as beautiful paintings.
Their menu includes both local and western cuisines as well as a fusion of the two to best cater to the Malaysian taste buds. To keep things fresh and exciting, the menu is changed twice a year to keep patrons on their toes. They promise something for everyone, including your little furry friends! There is a designated alfresco area just for your fur kids and even something on the menu for them!
Their signature dishes include the “Mama’s Satay” which consist of marinated hedgehog mushrooms skewers, served with cucumbers and rice cakes. Another popular item on the menu is the “Pink Bombshell Burgers”. It is called that because everything is pink! Pink bun and patty thanks to the beetroot. The patty uses a mixture of beetroot, chickpeas, mushrooms as well as liquid smoke. Paired with homemade vegan cheese, mayo and BBQ sauce, as well as caramelised onions with sweet potato
One creation that Smeeton is particularly proud of is the “Jackfruit Roti Jala” their version of the yellow netted pancake comes with a spiced jackfruit curry and coconut raita. They even have their own version of eggs benedict called ‘eggcelect benedict’ that consist of “tofu eggs”, carrot bacon, spinach, hollandaise sauce on fresh sourdough. You can add a fried egg to any dish for an extra RM2 as well!
As for beverages, they have an array to choose from! Cocktails, mocktails, shakes, smoothies, kombucha, coffee, tea, and even wine. The Cynthia’s margarita and Makissa-rita cocktails use the power duo’s favourite ingredients. If you loves your greens, the “Mrs Hulk” will be right up your alley, a thick smoothie that is a green concoction of mango, banana, coconut water and spirulina, or you can try the “Crookie Party” if you are in the mood for something sweeter, this one comes with crushed Oreos, banana, cacao nibs, dark chocolate and “mylk”
We all know a meal is not complete without dessert, the red velvet cake, salted caramel cheesecake and coconut chocolate tarts are their bestsellers but they have more! So have a peep at their cake fridge or ask the staff what they have on hand both vegan and vegetarian options are available. So, grab your pals and give their sharing platters a whirl.
